WAP Billing allows consumers to make payments for digital content and services via their mobile phones. Content owners can use WAP billing for one-off site access, subscription services or selling content.
In the UK, Tanla offers WAP billing through ‘Payforit’, a cross-network operator initiative. It provides consumers with a uniform purchase experience across all sites that replicates the internet ‘click and buy’ experience, showing clear pricing, terms and conditions, and merchant contact details before a purchase is confirmed.
Payments are no longer handled by individual content owners, but by carefully selected ‘Accredited Payment Intermediaries’ such as Tanla. Payforit is compulsory on all mobile internet purchases made by Vodafone, O2 and 3 customers, and it is anticipated that soon all networks will mandate Payforit for all mobile internet purchases.
Tanla will be rolling out WAP Billing services to other territories throughout 2008.
