Dr. RS Sharma

Independent Director

Dr. RS Sharma joined the Tanla Board as an Independent Director on January 8, 2024. With a distinguished career spanning nearly five decades in the Indian government, Dr. Sharma has been a pivotal force in shaping the country's Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) policies. He is well-known for his role as the founding Director General and Mission Director of UIDAI, where he spearheaded Aadhaar, the world's largest biometric identity system.


Dr. Sharma also served as the CEO of the National Health Authority, where he managed significant health initiatives like Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) and Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (AB-DM). His tenure as Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) was marked by key reforms in net neutrality, data ownership, privacy, and security. He has also held the positions of Secretary of the Department of Electronics and Information Technology and Chief Secretary of Jharkhand.

A member of the Indian Administrative Service since 1978, Dr. Sharma's expertise spans various domains, including e-Governance, digital payments, and public service IT systems. His policies have significantly contributed to the implementation of the UPI payment system and the modernisation of government systems through open source, open standards, and open APIs.


Dr. Sharma holds a PhD in Management and Public Policy from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, Masters in Computer Sciences from the University of California, USA, a Masters in Mathematics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and an LLB degree. His experience in leading India's digital transformation journey is a key addition to the company's board.
